Chairman's Message

For the past 2 years, we have reinforced our “Economy Mission” in contributing to the local knowledge-based economy as a high-value-added industry among the Hong Kong’s innovation and technology industries. Figures show that the total exports of Hong Kong medical and healthcare devices reach HK$10.5B (Jan-Oct 2016), a period to period increase of 7.7%. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare devices industry is an important supplier of the healthcare technology, we have pledged under our “Public Healthcare Mission”, to take up a leading role to ensure that safe and effective medical devices ultimately benefit the public.

HKMHDIA collaborates with many partners and stakeholders, who share similar and common missions. Highlights of programs and services we delivered in 2015-2016 are included in this journal. In particular, I would like to share with you the followings:

  1. With tremendous support from Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and after years of negotiation, we successfully increased our exhibition spaces in MEDICA 2016 (Germany) and CMEF 2016 (China) by 62% and 50% respectively. They are the largest medical devices exhibitions globally.

  2. We thank InvestHK, HKTDC, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and different Trade Commissions connecting us to different business and collaboration partners from overseas, including Germany, Israel, Netherlands, Norway and United Kingdom for example. With that, we have built strong tides with representatives of various local Consulates. Members will benefit from trades and technological advancement through such collaborations and partnerships.

  3. With the support of SME Development Fund of the Trade and Industry Department, HKMHDIA completed a project with a focus to explore the market potential of medical devices in New International Emerging Markets. We explored the regulatory requirements, business and business practices, market potential and distribution networks of three emerging markets, namely Indonesia, Russia and Brazil.

  4. Through the BUD project, we published market research reports and guidebooks, held exhibitions and business matching activities in five regions in China to promote Hong Kong medical device companies. I thank Hong Kong Productivity Council as the implementation agent.

  5. Last but not least, we co-organised with the Hospital Authority (HA) in 2015 to run a half-day seminar for the HA Procurement Team. The title is “Common Surgical, Interventional Procedures and Products Seminar”. Over 170 participants from different HA clusters and industries participated the event. The seminar covered different certification requirements of medical devices for minimal access surgery procedures. I would like to thank HA again allowing such a large number of their staff vacating a half noon to attend this meaningful event.

Our focus for the forthcoming 2 years is “INTEGRATION”. Our Executive Board will continue to seek supports from stakeholders including universities, research institutions, technology incubators, professional bodies, HKTDC and the HKSAR government so that we can tightly integrate our value chain. We also see the uptake of new medical and healthcare device startups and would like to help in all regards in this highly regulated industry. We also target to extend our outreaching to the professions such as doctors and nurses. We thank all those who had shared their visions with us in building this vibrant industry to another level of high success but at the same time also upholding the vigilant needs in public health.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the effort of all former Executive Board Members, Honorary Advisors and staff who have timelessly served HKMHDIA. We have elected a dynamic, respected, professional and socially-responsible Board of Executive Members and Advisors to lead the Association, to serve the development of the industry, to act as a communication gateway amongst the Government, the industry, local research and education institutions and other Mainland and Overseas partners, and to explore business and commercialization opportunities for our members and other local stakeholders.

Thank you for your continuous supports and I wish you all a fruitful 2016, a prosperous 2017 and beyond. Lastly, I wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Ir Prof Andros Chan
